The Pheno Hunt: How We Select the Next Generation of BLEM Strains

At BLEM, every strain that reaches the shelf has gone through an extensive selection process long before it’s ever named or packaged.

For the last 6 months, we have been working through our most recent pheno hunt to identify the strongest expressions from a group of carefully selected genetic lines. The goal is simple: find the phenotypes worthy of becoming the next strain in the BLEM lineup.

What the Hunt Involves

Over the course of the hunt, multiple phenotypes were grown, observed, and tested across several key markers.

Each pheno was evaluated on:

  • Aroma and terpene expression
  • Plant structure and growth behavior
  • Resin production and trichome coverage
  • Flower density and visual appeal
  • Smoke, burn, and flavor translation
  • Overall effect and balance

Only the most complete expressions are considered for production. Phenotypes that excelled in one category but lacked in others were ultimately left behind. The intention is to select the strains with the best representation of the lineage, which requires extreme scrutiny. We never settle, and we run endless trials in order to find the best of the best.

In the end, 4–6 standout phenos were selected to move into the next stage of the process.

Bringing the Hunt to San Diego

To further evaluate the final selections, we opened up testing to our loyal customers and supporters in San Diego at our private BLEM Casino Night Pheno Testing Party on January 28th, to see which strains pass the smoke test.

Based on feedback, we pay close attention to the phenos guests gravitate towards, flavor clarity and terpene translation, burn quality and smoke experience, and overall effect.

To keep evaluations unbiased, guests were not given any information about the lineage behind the phenotypes they were sampling.

No strain names. No crosses. No hints.

Throughout the evening, we heard guesses that certain phenos carried the influence of Blue Dream, Strawberry crosses, classic OG crosses, and Jack crosses. Whether it was terpene familiarity, effect recognition, or structural tells, seasoned palates connected the dots to their favorite strains. We can’t wait to announce the full lineage breakdowns and cross information for the winners. Only the phenos that delivered across every category will advance into production—either as limited drops or future staples within the BLEM portfolio. Stay tuned to see which strains made the cut!
